Kim Sae-ron, an award-winning South Korean actor whose career was impacted by a 2022 drunk-driving incident, was found dead at her Seoul residence on Sunday, police confirmed. She was 24.
“There are no signs of foul play,” a police official told AFP, providing no further details.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a friend discovered Kim at her home Sunday evening and alerted authorities.
While the official cause of death has not been released, police believe it to be suicide, stating, “We suspect she made an extreme choice.” No note was found, Yonhap reported.
Kim is best known for her role in the 2010 film The Man from Nowhere, where she portrayed a kidnapped child saved by a former special forces agent.
She earned the Best New Actress award at the Korean Film Awards for her performance.
Throughout her career, Kim showcased her versatility across various acting roles, earning multiple accolades, including Best Actress in 2015 for A Girl at My Door, according to her IMDb page.
However, her promising career was abruptly cut short after a 2022 drunk-driving incident, which resulted in a fine of 20 million won ($13,800).
Facing widespread public backlash after the incident, Kim struggled to secure new acting roles.
According to IMDb, Kim’s final appearance was in the 2023 Netflix series Bloodhounds.
